Our Pedagogical Approach
Visible Learning

Visible Learning at KAIS
At KAIS, our teaching is grounded in evidence, reflection, and purpose. Guided by the research of John Hattie and supported by a three-year School Impact process with Corwin, we have transformed our pedagogical practices to ensure maximum impact on student learning and achievement.
We are proud to be the first school in Japan to earn Visible Learning Certification through Corwin. This distinction reflects our deep commitment to using research-backed strategies that are proven to accelerate learning. It also affirms our belief that every student is capable of progress, and that the teacher’s role in making learning visible is central to their success.
What is Visible Learning
Led by professor John Hattie, Visible Learning is one of the most comprehensive bodies of educational research ever conducted. It synthesizes over 2,100 meta-analyses, 130,000 studies, and draws on data from more than 300 million students worldwide. The goal: to identify what works best in teaching and learning by quantifying the effect of various classroom practices.
This research reveals that it’s not just what we teach, but how we teach, and how we measure and respond to learning, that makes the greatest difference.

How it Shapes Learning at KAIS
At KAIS, Visible Learning isn’t just a program, it’s part of our culture. Our teachers continuously engage in cycles of evidence, feedback, and reflection to refine instruction and deepen student understanding. These efforts are anchored by a shared belief in collective teacher efficacy — the idea that when educators work together with clarity and purpose, they can significantly raise student outcomes.
We focus on helping students become assessment-capable learners, learners who know what they’re learning, why it matters, how they’re progressing, and what their next steps are. They are empowered to set goals, reflect on their learning, and use feedback to move forward, not just in one subject, but across their entire educational journey.
We welcome mistakes as part of the process, and we help students develop the dispositions of resilience, curiosity, and self-regulation that lead to lifelong learning.
High-Impact Teaching Across the School
High-quality teaching and learning at KAIS is student-centered, rigorous, and meaningful. It prioritizes:
Critical thinking, creativity, and real-world problem solving
Ongoing use of data to inform teaching and support progress
Learning environments where feedback is central and valued
Consistency and alignment across subjects and grade levels
These elements are embedded in our Teaching and Learning Policy, ensuring a common language and shared expectations across the school.
Ultimately, Visible Learning at KAIS equips students with the skills, mindsets, and clarity they need to thrive — not only academically, but as adaptable, reflective, and capable individuals in a rapidly changing world.
